Students of jazz at Luther have the opportunity to participate in two jazz bands, a jazz combo, vocal jazz, study jazz improvisation, composition/arranging, and history. The Purdue Jazz system consists of the Purdue Jazz Band, American Music Repertory Ensemble, Lab Jazz Band I, Lab Jazz Band II, Tower of Power band, and the Guitar & Saxophone Ensemble. Jazz Band helps prepare students for eventual membership in the Luther College Jazz Orchestra, a single of the major touring ensembles at Luther. Membership in every of the jazz bands is determined by means of auditions held each semester. Musicians are grouped by ability, and overall performance literature is based on the playing level of each band. The Jazz System at ISU is lead by directors Dr. Jim Bovinette and Michael Giles. Our ensembles consist of two student massive bands and 3 to five jazz combos each semester. Dr. Bovinette has directed the jazz ensemble program because 1995, and has featured the band in far more that 100 performances in the Martha Ellen Tye Recital Hall residence to all the bands regular concerts. The band students have been featured with guest artists such as Marc Colby, Ron Carter, Reggie Thomas, Damani Phillips, Brian Blade, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, JoAnne Brackeen, and Dick Oatts. The ISU Jazz Ensemble has had the honor to be featured at the Iowa Jazz Championships, the Iowa Music Educators Association annual convention, in concert with the Central Iowa Symphony, and with the Village Vanguard at Stephans Auditorium.
The band has also been recognized for its achievements and soloist at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival, the Greeley Jazz Festival, and the Eau Claire Jazz Festival. The ensemble gives students a solid foundation in the jazz tradition of huge band swing whilst at the same time exploring far more contemporary genres and new jazz compositions and arrangements.

The 20-member Luther College Jazz Band is directed by Jon Ailabouni and performs regularly all through the year such as Household Weekend events, the Homecoming Jazz Evening at Marty's, and its personal formal concert every single semester. Belmont Jazz Band plays some of the most difficult and stimulating music from the jazz repertoire. The ensemble performs diverse literature that ranges from massive band swing to modern day jazz-fusion. This select group, consisting of 5 saxes/reeds, five trumpets, and 4 trombones and a complete rhythm section permits ample room for individual solos and full ensemble. Our premier ensemble, the Purdue Jazz Band, has received quite a few awards at collegiate jazz festivals in recent years, including the North Texas Jazz Festival, the Notre Dame Jazz Festival and the Elmhurst Collegiate Jazz Festival.
